![]() What pushed me to buy an electric toothbrush was that I was brushing my teeth way too hard, according to my dentist. Of course, you don't need to use the app for the electric brush to work, but then you probably shouldn't spend several hundred dollars on this model. Not-so-effective tracking doesn't help either. But for me, having to grab my phone from the nightstand and open the app every time I brushed lost its appeal quickly. I can see the app being handy for kids to get used to the routine of brushing teeth well, making sure they're not rushing through it or missing specific areas. ![]() Once you're done, the app asks if you've brushed your tongue and flossed, which is a nice nudge to do those things for better tooth health. Following along in the app, you get a timer and a real-time look at the areas you haven't brushed yet. The whole experience also wants you to stare at your phone's screen during the brushing session, which is not necessarily something I want to do in my morning routine. The sides of the mouth are the hardest locations to track, and the app often marks these spots as not brushed at all or not brushed enough, despite my obvious efforts of focusing on these areas. Unfortunately, the iO suffers from the same issues as other app-connected electric toothbrushes I've tried: It doesn't always accurately detect where I'm brushing. This can cause plaque buildup or even lead the cavity goon right to you. ![]() You might think you're reaching everywhere, but you could constantly be missing the back of some teeth, as my dentist kindly told me a few years ago. Why would you want to connect your toothbrush to an app? Well, the main draw is it can tell you where you're not brushing thoroughly. ![]()

These are just a few examples of the many that fall into the stability shoe category. Some of the more common stability shoes are Asics Kayano, Nike Zoom Structure, Brooks Adrenaline, and Saucony Omni. These provide support to the inside of the foot much more than shoes with a focus on cushioning. The shoe types that are helpful for a flatfoot are stability shoes or motion control shoes. In many cases, the support supplied by a shoe isn’t enough and orthotics may be necessary to control excessive pronation. As the foot tends to roll inwards more, the support will help control this over-pronation. More specifically, medial support or support to the inside of the foot. When looking for an appropriate shoe for a flat foot, one should focus on support. For more shock absorption, a neutral foot type can also do well in a high cushion shoe. All of these shoes provide a lightweight feel but do so with minimal support and limited cushioning. A few examples of these are New Balance Minimus, Nike Free, Brooks Pure Drift, Merrell Run Bare Access 2, and Saucony Kinvara. People with this foot type may do well in the previously mentioned minimalistic shoes. Runners and walkers with a normal arch tend to do well with lightweight or cushioned shoes. This flexion of the arch is what provides our feet with shock absorption during walking or running. Normal biomechanics during our gait cycle result in the foot rolling outward (supinated) during heel strike and rolling inward (pronated) during mid-stance. With a “normal” arch, the foot functions in a neutral position. Best Running Shoes for Normal Arched Feet The purpose of this blog is to give an overview of general foot types and what to look for in a running shoe. Some people require more support and/or cushioning in order to function at a pain-free, injury-free level. The idea is to allow our feet to do most of the work and rely less on the shoe.īut with such a wide range in foot types, the minimalistic shoes may work against you as well. Secondly, functioning with “less shoe” can theoretically promote increased strength, balance, and overall biomechanics. The energy saved from this decreased weight can ideally be used towards running – not carrying a heavy shoe. Firstly, the minimalistic shoe is lighter. There are two primary reasons for this trend. ![]() They are generally manufactured with less cushioning and support – overall much less material than standard running shoes. A minimalistic shoe is defined as a shoe that allows the foot to function as close to its natural state as possible. Over the past few years, there has been a trend in the running world toward minimalistic shoes. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Wherever we're able to put renewable natural gas into the system, that is fossil gas that doesn't have to be used." "We're looking around to be able to find renewable natural gas to help displace fossil gas on the natural gas system," said Vermont Gas President Lunderville. In documents filed with the PUC, Vermont Gas says that the renewable energy credits attached to this natural gas are key to protecting rate payers from price hikes. “But VGS will retain ownership of the renewable attributes and they will claim that the product is renewable, even though there won’t be any difference before and after this contract, in terms of what will be burned by their customers.” “Almost all of the gas that leaves that hub on the way to Vermont will be fossil gas, and most of that will be fracked,” said Blood. ![]() He takes issue with the idea that the gas from Seneca Meadows will make it to Vermont. The biogas will be transported on pipelines VGS currently uses to transport natural gas. From there, it will be piped north and east around Lake Ontario, and eventually to Vermont. In it's decision to approve the contract, the Public Utility Commission said the biogas will be transported from from Seneca Meadows, up and around Lake Erie, to the Enbridge Gas Dawn Hub located in Ontario. In Vermont, about 130 people filed comments with the Public Utility Commission to oppose the deal, including from at least six lawmakers. The landfill’s owners have applied for an expansion that’s faced pushback from environmental groups and some local business owners there. The gas will be generated at the Seneca Meadows Landfill in Waterloo, NY. Representatives of Vermont Gas told the PUC they were in conversations about the contract as far back as last spring, when a bill to create a Clean Heat Standard for Vermont was before the Legislature.ĭocuments filed with the PUC say the deal could be worth anywhere from tens to hundreds of millions of dollars. The utility's latest tariff agreement cites insufficient supply of locally sourced biogas in Vermont. It's the third contract for out-of-state biogas that the PUC has approved for Vermont Gas. There is an option to extend the contract for another five years. ![]() The contract commits Vermont Gas to purchasing out-of-state biogas from Archaea Energy, a subsidiary of the fossil fuel giant British Petroleum, for 14.5 years. More from Vermont Public: How Vermont is – and isn’t – on track to reduce its share of climate-warming emissions "Our decision is based on our determination that if the contract is managed effectively, it can be a cost-effective means for VGS to reduce its overall emissions," the PUC said in its decision. The utility says the contract will help it meet its climate goals. Vermont Gas President and CEO Neale Lunderville says the utility will start making requests for the gas to be delivered early in the new year.Įnergy regulators approved the deal Tuesday, despite criticism that it won’t meaningfully reduce Vermont’s - or the gas utility's - emissions. It can be substituted for conventional natural gas, but proponents argue that because the gas is siphoned from carbon-filled waste, it is cleaner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from the breakdown of waste, including at landfills, from animal manure and food scraps. The gas, which the utility calls renewable natural gas, is also called biomethane or biogas. The PUC says it's the largest contract for so-called renewable natural gas the company has ever pursued. Vermont's Public Utility Commission has approved a request by Vermont Gas Systems to enter into a long-term contract to buy biogas and its associated renewable energy credits from a landfill in New York’s Finger Lakes region. VoiP, Video, Chat during remote control session ![]() ![]() One of his first tasks was to revise "B3: Palace of the Silver Princess," by Jean Wells, which had been recalled and pulped after its first printing. After his work on Basic D&D, Moldvay immediately moved on to producing adventures for the game system. That version of D&D, often called BECMI, was the one that actually included Companion and Master sets, which supported levels 15-36 between them.Ībout the Creators. The goal was once more to make the game even easier to learn from the rulebooks. It was replaced just two and a half years later by Frank Mentzer's third edition of Basic D&D. Moldvay's D&D wasn't the final iteration of Basic D&D. The adventure was Gary Gygax's "B2: Keep on the Borderlands." Because of its inclusion in the Basic D&D set, "Keep" became the most-published RPG adventure ever, with a much-later estimate suggesting that there were 1.5 million copies of it made. Moldvay's Basic D&D was sold both as a standalone book and in a box with six dice and an adventure. ![]() Gary Gygax mentioned a "Masters Set" around the same time, which was to cover levels 15-36, but that wouldn't appear during Basic D&D's second edition.Ĭolor-Coding the Boxes. Some people like to classify the D&D boxes by color: This edition is thus the "magenta box," to differentiate it from the "red box" edition that would follow in 1983. ![]() The Basic Set was (as planned) released simultaneously with the new Expert Set by David "Zeb" Cook, which expanded Basic D&D to levels 4-14. Moldvay's Basic D&D was enough of a change from the previous edition of the game that it was actually a "new edition" as it's understood in the modern roleplaying market, which was a pretty rare occurrence in the 70s or early 80s. Not a big quantum jump ahead, but better in a number of minor ways." As for the results, even former editor Holmes said, "I think the new Basic Set rules are an improvement over the first edition. All around, every effort was made to upgrade the game for starting players. Moldvay's second edition also cleaned up character alignment, constrained spell choice, and even improved the layout of the book. ![]() The twelve race-and-class combinations of Holmes' Basic D&D (including things such as the elven fighter/magic-user multiclass) became just seven classes in the new Basic D&D: clerics, dwarves, elves, fighters (which had still been "fighting men" under Holmes), halflings, magic-users, and thieves. Thus, for example, there were no longer separate character classes and races. Whereas Holmes' Basic D&D was mostly a matter of organization and explanation, Moldvay's Basic D&D also engaged in simplification. Thus, as early as fall 1979, work began on an Expert Set that would allow the hundreds of thousands of players who had learned the game from Basic D&D to continue on, past the three levels available in that game.Ī new version of the Basic Set was required for release with the Expert Set. Holmes' Basic Set was widely successful - sufficiently so that TSR was wary of sending its players on to the more challenging original D&D game or the more complex AD&D game (1977-79) game. Basic D&D was never expected to be its own game system - at first. However, the expectation was that players would go on to the original D&D games from there. He wanted to create a game that was easier to learn (as the original D&D was considered notoriously bad in that regard) and that could be better understand by the high school and junior high demographics, toward which the game was then trending. When Eric Holmes put together the original Basic D&D, his purpose was simply to clean up and organize the original Dungeons & Dragons (1974) along with some content from Supplement I: Greyhawk (1975). It was released in January 1981, leading off the year. ![]() The Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rules (1981), by Tom Moldvay, was the second edition of Basic D&D, with the previous edition created by J. It was the first true standalone edition of what became "Basic D&D" as previous editions had instead been based on OD&D play. This is the 1981 edition of the D&D Basic Rulebook, which was sold as part of the boxed D&D Basic Set and also on its own. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Lynne Ramsay–directed film goes on to become a Cannes darling, cementing Miller as a rising talent.
